A Useful Man To Know
This poem was submitted by Stephen Houlden who received it from his Mother. It was written in the 1920s for Arthur Houlden, shoemaker and sexton at St Paul's church, Over Tabley.
A Useful Man To Know
In the shadow of a country church,
Lives a man who is far renowned,
For his boots and shoes are quite the best
That in Cheshire can be found.
He can fit your feet with boots or shoes,
And if you're fond of honey,
He'll fit you up with that as well,
And Beeswax too, for money

And when you've done with boots and shoes
That he makes out of leather,
He'll dig your grave and keep it neat
With Primroses or Heather,
He'll toll the bell and say Amen
To all the Parson says,
And muse upon the life of man
And the number of his days.

And if your Tombstone gets gummed up
With motor dust and grime,
For half-a-crown he'll do it up
And make it look quite prime
So, if your "ready mades" don't fit,
Or, you find they're wearing badly,
Just call and buy a perfect pair
At HOULDEN'S, Over Tabley.
